Identifying drivers of biodiversity
Second Nature worked with San Francisco's Environment Department and the Presidio Trust to help the city understand patterns of biodiversity in relation to existing resources. We developed a research design to evaluate wildlife use of municipally owned and managed coast live oaks. The project assessed different options for data collection from professional surveys to community science, considering feasibility, cost, and experimental design.
San Francisco is a leader in urban biodiversity planning, having passed an innovative Biodiversity Resolution in 2011 and developed an ambitious climate action plan with strong biodiversity connections in 2021. The project is a great example of how cities can use data-driven approaches and community science collaboration to guide decisions to support biodiversity.
